Description:

Guardian Media Group (GMG) is a leading global media organisation, the publisher of the Guardian, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2021, the Observer and the Guardian.com, which attracts over 200 million global unique browsers each month. We are renowned for our ground breaking independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.
That is where you come in.

We are looking for a SETI (Software Engineer, Tools and Infrastructure) to join the team.

About the role

Your personal brief will be to design and implement technical solutions to the quality issues faced by your team. In doing so you’ll also be pivotal in shaping the culture of your team and in embedding quality throughout the whole development process. You’ll be researching new techniques, tools and processes and encouraging discussion within the team about how and where we can use them.

There is a wide scope for this role, so we are excited about creative developers & engineers who can explore and create solutions for a fast-paced, cutting edge development team. You’ll mostly be programming in Scala and JavaScript, running in AWS, but we use the tool that best fits the problem, and are interested in applicants with experience in any language.

Much of our code is openly available on GitHub, and some of our projects are widely used throughout the Open Source community. Many of our developers regularly attend and present at conferences. Please visit our Guardian Developers site , Guardian Developer blog and our SETI blog for more information about working in the Digital Development team.

About you

  • As a Software Engineer (Tools, Infrastructure, Process, Automation), you’ll be comfortable working on the back-end and front-end. We typically use Scala and JavaScript; you may not be familiar with Scala yet, but you should have a solid back-end knowledge in an equivalent programming language
  • You are very familiar with continuous integration and delivery
  • You are a creative, engaged, and intelligent person who loves web technologies. First-hand experience improving existing processes
  • You are excited by the opportunity to shape the future of digital journalism.
  • You can make reasoned choices regarding what technologies to use and when to use them.
