Description

Head of Archive (parental cover), The Guardian Foundation

Salary: 36-38k. This post is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 10 months

Preferred start date: 10 January 2022

The Guardian Foundation is an independent charity with a focus on supporting media under threat, promoting diversity in the media and empowering children and young people to engage with the news. Our vision is a world where all people can tell their stories, access the truth and hold power to account. The Foundation owns the Guardian News & Media (GNM) Archive, the repository for the records of the Guardian and Observer newspapers.

We are seeking a qualified archivist to oversee the professional management and care of the GNM Archive, and the provision of access to colleagues and other users, during a period of maternity leave. As an enthusiastic and self-motivated professional with proven experience in a similar role, the successful candidate will need the confidence and ability to work autonomously, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong IT skills are essential, as is an interest in and knowledge of modern history and current affairs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Management of the GNM Archive including acquisitions, appraisal, cataloguing, preservation, access and outreach
  • Answering internal and external enquiries relating to the archive collections and history of the paper and hosting visits from researchers
  • Line management of the Archivist and Digital Archives Trainee and supervision of volunteers and work experience students
  • Management of the Calm database and the digital repository
  • Maintenance of the archive’s website and online catalogue (Calmview)
  • Organising loans for exhibitions
  • Responsibility for the archive budget
  • Ensuring correct environmental conditions and security in the archive stores
  • Preparation of statistics and reports for the Guardian Foundation
  • Involvement in strategic planning for the charity, along with other Guardian Foundation programme leads
