Location: Glasgow, Drug Discovery Unit, Beatson Institute for Cancer Research

Salary Range: £24,000 - £26,000 per annum (Associate Scientist), £29,000 - £37,000 (Scientist)

We are looking for a highly skilled, enthusiastic and pro-active laboratory scientist with a keen interest in biophysics to join the drug discovery team, based at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow. You will work closely with the wider project teams to contribute to the achievement of project objectives, as well as bringing scientific innovation. The role requires generation of high quality and reproducible data within specific timelines for several different cancer targets.

About CRUK drug discovery

We're in the process of changing the way we support preclinical therapeutic discovery and development and we're establishing a world-class drug discovery organisation across our multiple drug discovery sites. Further details on this will be shared soon.

We have a major focus on establishing and prosecuting biologically-themed multi-project alliances with industrial partners, or through creation of new companies. Based at the Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge, the Beatson Institute in Glasgow and the Francis Crick Institute, London, CRUK drug discovery comprises ~150 staff from both industrial and academic backgrounds.

We bring together the best minds in basic and clinical cancer research, the diligence and drive of pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and our in-house drug discovery and alliance management capabilities to deliver breakthrough medicines for cancer patients.

Our laboratories house the personnel and state of the art equipment required to progress projects from initial hypothesis through to selection of candidate drugs for regulatory development. We couple this with a deep understanding of academic and industrial drivers, enabling us to build alliances that combine the curiosity of basic research and the rigour of drug discovery.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for a talented and motivated scientist to join our biophysics team in the Molecular Sciences group. The successful applicant will primarily use SPR to characterise protein-ligand interactions, applying these to Drug Discovery projects at all stages from early hit identification through to lead optimisation. The quality data that you produce will be critical, helping teams form an understanding of both the mechanism of action of our molecules and the target biology. Knowledge of other techniques such as ITC and NMR is advantageous in making full use of our excellent biophysics capabilities. The ability to design and run experiments as well as interpret and present the results are key attributes. Training from other members of the team in technical aspects is available therefore an ability and enthusiasm for learning is crucial.

Biophysics plays a key role in our drug discovery projects, so you will work collaboratively with all the teams (biophysicists, protein scientists, crystallographers, biologists and chemists) across our Drug Discovery sites.
In addition, you will contribute to the development of the biophysics discipline by identifying and driving improvements and innovations that advance drug discovery projects.
