Assistant Planning Adviser - South West Region

Our Planning Team has an important role to play in promoting an integrated approach to sustainable development. It’s a busy and exciting time to join, with challenges ranging from major infrastructure projects to the sensitive development of our own properties to sustain their future, tackle climate change and enable them to welcome everyone.

This is a great opportunity to work on varied projects in beautiful and historic places, expanding your knowledge and experience across policy and development management.

Flexible location: we have offices at Killerton - Exeter, Leigh Court - Bristol, Tisbury - Wiltshire, and Lanhydrock - Cornwall.

Flexible working: the role is offered on a full time (fixed term) basis; we will also consider applications for part-time or job sharing.

Covering letter: please could you supply a covering letter with your application, including your preferences for office location and working hours.

Interview dates: Provisionally set for Wednesday 20 April or Thursday 21 April.

Queries: you can contact [email protected] or [email protected]

What it's like to work here Here at the National Trust, we care for and provide access to more land and buildings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland than any other private landowner. In South West England this includes Grade I listed buildings, National Parks and extensive areas of the coast. Small wonder, then, that effective planning and land management is at the heart of everything that we do.

You’ll support the work of our Planning Advisers in South West England. You’ll have the flexibility to work from home, at our offices and properties. Some travel is required for meetings and site visits, often to rural places.

What you'll be doing You’ll be working alongside a range of specialists including archaeologists, ecologists and curators. You’ll support and collaborate with colleagues in the regional team and, importantly, at many of our properties. You’ll also join regular meetings/ teleconferences with Planning Advisers across the National Trust, where you’ll benefit from knowledge sharing and opportunities for training and CPD.

You’ll have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of planning issues with a particular focus on the conservation of heritage, ecology and protected landscapes. Under the guidance of our Planning Advisers, you’ll assist with planning matters across our regional portfolio of properties, advising on our development proposals. You’ll also monitor and respond to external planning applications, and consultations on local and neighbourhood plans. You’ll engage with officers at local planning authorities and with statutory consultees including Historic England.

Who we're looking for We’d love to hear from you, if you have the following skills and experience:

·A planner with an RTPI-accredited degree or working towards chartered RTPI membership through another recognised route

·Knowledge and understanding of the legislative background to planning and of local government

·Experience of analysing, resolving and preparing positions/advice on planning issues

·Influencing, negotiating and communication skills, ability to engage with a range of audiences

·Ability to build collaborative and effective working relationships

·A client focus and the ability to manage your time across a varied caseload

·A full UK driving licence
