Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the West Sussex High Weald, Worth Abbey is an English Benedictine monastery, a sanctuary where the Gospel of Christ is lived and shared in fraternity, prayer and service. Founded in 1933, and an independent monastery from 1957, Worth Abbey is a spiritual, pastoral, and cultural centre for the locality and more widely. At its heart is a community of Catholic monks following the Rule of St. Benedict. The Abbey Church is the central feature of Abbey campus which also houses Worth School, a Catholic Independent day and boarding school, the Abbey Retreat Centre, the Worth Abbey RC Parish, and some 500 acres of quiet gardens, forest, and farmland which are home to a campsite, a livery stable and a working farm.

Our Director of Music will manage and develop the provision of Music at Sunday morning Mass at Worth Abbey (including at major feasts), in particular taking responsibility for the recruitment and development of a choir and liaising with the Abbey organist. You will also manage the rota of cantors singing at Saturday evening mass and holiday periods.

You will have;

Formal qualifications in Music.

Experience of choral direction and of recruiting and developing a choir.

Experience of running music within a liturgical context

Secure understanding of music theory, to be able to lead a choir.

Ideally, you will have a formal qualification in Choral Direction (e.g. Dip ABRSM, RCO Dip CHD, MMus Choral Direction), experience in using Music Technology software (in particular notation software such as Sibelius) and hardware and experience of working within the Roman Catholic Liturgy.
