Description

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is the independent safety and economic regulator for Britain’s railways and monitor of England’s motorways and A roads. Our role is to protect the interests of rail and road users, improving the safety, value and performance of railways and roads today and in the future. We are responsible for ensuring that railway operators comply with health and safety law and for regulating Network Rail’s activities and funding requirements, as well as access to the railway network. We also license the operators of railway assets and publish rail statistics. We are the competition authority for railways in Great Britain and enforce consumer protection law in relation to the railway. As highways monitor, we are responsible for monitoring Highways England’s management of the strategic road network. A new public body is now being created, “Great British Railways (GBR) which will integrate the railways and deliver passenger-focused travel with simpler, modern fares and reliable services.

We are now looking to appoint a Deputy Director of Railway Operations. You will be responsible for leading the development and operationalisation of the ORR’s regulatory policy for holding GBR to account for railway operations working with colleagues from across the ORR and stakeholders in industry.

You will bring experience of operating at senior level in Great Britain’s rail sector, you have successfully led change, are credible with very senior stakeholders and are a self-starter who is comfortable working under pressure. You will also recognise the importance first class regulation can make in terms of service on our railways.

This role presents a rare career enhancing opportunity that combines complex legal challenges with the chance to lead a high performing team.
