Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to undertake the new role of Specialist Content Communications Officer for Essex Police’s award-winning Media & Communications Team.

Essex Police has a strong and proven track record in delivering major primetime documentaries that showcase the very best of our force (Murder 24/7, Hunting the Essex Lorry Killers, Barrymore: The Body in the Pool). We want to do more to tell our stories through the medium of documentary and have created this new role to help us to do this.

This is a challenging role that requires the successful candidate to support the Deputy Head of Department to deliver documentary projects from pitch through to broadcast. The role will support in assessing all filming requests (picking out the very best projects that will help us achieve the objectives that underpin our force plan and maintain our high levels of public confidence), liaise with production companies, liaise with police colleagues to ensure support for filming, support with contractual negotiations, and support the smooth-running of filming for projects that get underway.

The post-holder will also be expected to proactively identify areas of work across the force that could be promoted via broadcast footage or documentaries and work with the Head and Deputy Heads of Department to pitch ideas to broadcast media, identifying and commissioning broadcast material for use externally (using videographer or BWV opportunities) in order to ensure that the work of the Force is effectively portrayed and promoted.

The role will be a challenging one and will require the post-holder to provide a high level of day to day support to Essex Police officers and staff during the making of documentaries including: offering support, guidance and providing training where required to ensure that representatives of the Force are fully briefed and prepared; ensuring legal compliance across the spectrum of all relevant areas of legislation (Data Protection, Contempt of Court, Disclosure/CPI); oversee filming; be part of an on-call rota where necessary and appropriate to support filming; be the conduit between Essex Police officers and staff, senior departmental management and production companies to ensure filming runs smoothly and problems are identified early on and resolved.

The role will also take a lead in ensuring legal agreements are drawn up and agreed before the commencement of any filming.

During any periods of filming hiatus the post-holder will be called upon to support other teams and projects within our department. This will include supporting the Campaigns, Events and Partnerships Team for campaign delivery, supporting the Press Office with media management of long-running cases or operations, supporting the Internal Communications team with any specialist projects and supporting the Content, Platform and Insights team with the production of specialist content packages. The role provides a real opportunity for someone with a passion for film-making and wider police communications.
