Description

Homerton College has a rich history. It was originally established in Homerton, London in 1798, as a dissenting academy. It later moved to Cambridge, and it received its Royal Charter in 2010, making it Cambridge’s newest and largest College. The past 30 years have seen remarkable change as Homerton has rapidly developed into a forward-looking Cambridge College, fit for the twenty-first century, leading the way in relation to access and widening participation, education, innovation, diversity and inclusion, and encouraging a commitment to public service. With over 750 student residents on site, 66 Fellows and approximately 150 support staff, the College consistently exceeds benchmarks and targets for the admission of socio-economically disadvantaged students and students from ethnic minorities. 75% of UK undergraduates admitted in 2021 were from state schools with 19% from POLAR 1 and 2 postcodes.

The College has a new Principal, Lord Simon Woolley, who took up the post in 2021. He has inherited a visionary College, hungry to play its part in the world. This is an incredibly exciting time for a new Bursar to join Homerton and enable the College to deliver its ambitious aims.

The Bursar is the senior administrative post within the College, and the College’s financial lead. Working closely with the Principal, Vice-Principal, College Tutors and Operations Team as a College Officer and Fellow, the Bursar is responsible for the management of all staff and non-staff resources. This includes strategic oversight of the College’s finances, facilities, investments and commercial activity, and ensuring the smooth operation of all support functions of the College.

The successful candidate will combine successful senior leadership experience across business operations in complex organisations, with keen financial planning, budgeting and control experience, and demonstrable belief in the distinct educational purpose and inclusive values of Homerton College. Individuals who seek to empower colleagues, who are creative and resourceful about income generation and capital deployment in line with Homerton’s public service ethos, and who will enjoy working with well-established collegiate governance structures, will thrive in this role.
