Description

Salary: Competitive, DoE

Global Investigations Review, a leading international news, analysis and data platform covering the intricacies of cross-border investigations into corporate wrongdoing, is looking for an experienced reporter and/or editor to join its team in the US as deputy editor.

You’ll be overseeing a US-based team of reporters responsible for GIR’s coverage of foreign bribery and sanctions law, policy, investigations and enforcement developments – a fast-moving area following Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine and last year’s Biden administration proclamation denoting global corruption as a top national security priority.

You will write for a global expert audience comprising white-collar investigations and compliance professionals at law firms, government agencies, professional services firms and major companies. In addition to covering relevant news, you will be expected to build on the team’s established track-record in delivering relevant high-quality, in-depth analysis and regular scoops on new processes and personnel changes at major agencies including the DOJ, SEC and OFAC. You will also drive coverage of new trends or underreported yet integral elements of international investigations into corporate corruption and sanctions evasion.

This is an amazing opportunity for anyone with demonstrable experience producing daily news and enterprise stories for a high-level business audience to take a next step in their career. The successful candidate is a self-starter who enjoys scouring court documents, company reports, the filing of freedom of information requests and talking to a wide range of sources to inform their reporting, and can motivate their direct reports to do the same. They can turn complex subject matter into easily readable and engaging prose. They don’t shy away from challenging stories or assignments, and are at ease speaking with senior white-collar lawyers, business leaders and government officials.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage team of 2-3 US-based reporters producing daily stories on US foreign bribery and sanctions investigations and enforcement.
  • Set beats, assignments and deadlines for the US-based reporters and edit their work to a high standard.
  • Ensure a regular output of diary and enterprise stories/interviews within the FCPA/sanctions beat for our premium brands.
  • Manage US team’s schedule in relation to conference/trial coverage and US staff vacations.
  • Closely work with the UK-based editor to set team-wide priorities and exchange information on ongoing cases of interest.
  • Manage the team and overall output in the editor’s absence.
  • Represent GIR at our own and other industry conferences.
  • Build/maintain a wide source network of government and private practice lawyers, as well as consultants, multilateral bank officials and in-house legal and compliance execs.
  • Independently produce original content: can range from daily news to trend pieces, long-form features, FOIA-related data-based analysis; trial coverage and more.
  • Identify new areas of interest to our audience.
  • Take lead role in managing high-value annual research projects (including but not limited to the GIR 100, a guide to the best investigations practices).
