The role is part of the National Trust’s Treescapes Project which is delivering woodland restoration and new woodland creation across the Lake District. Deer populations need to be properly managed in order to keep the woodlands in good ecological condition and allow young trees to establish successfully.

This role is focussed on leading and delivering a professional approach to deer and wildlife management across Cumbria and into North Lancashire.

This is a 3 year fixed-term contract, working out of the NT Regional Office at The Hollens, Grasmere LA22 9QZ. There will be a mix of office and field work, with some local travel.

You will be working across our extensive portfolio of land, engaging with colleagues in the countryside management teams and specialists from our internal consultancy, along with volunteer stalkers, tenants, neighbours and external stakeholders.

What you'll be doing
You will be responsible for all aspects of deer management, working with Deer Management Groups to deliver for the National Trust at a landscape scale through a team of over 30 volunteer stalkers and supported by the NT Lakes Wildlife Control Group.

Key elements of the role include :

  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Deer management plans
  • Population and impact assessments
  • Setting and delivery of cull targets
  • Management of over 30 volunteer stalkers
  • Oversight of 2 deer larders and venison sales
  • Support and expert advice on firearms and wildlife issues
  • Compliance with H&S and animal welfare standards

Who we're looking for

  • Significant practical experience in wild deer management and relevant food hygiene and processing
  • Deer Stalking Certificates 1 and 2, including the Wild Game Meat Hygiene Certificate (‘Trained Hunter’) are required.
  • Wider understanding of conservation and land management, including farming and forestry practices
  • Experience of, or a willingness to, work with volunteers, with relevant leadership skills including coaching, team development, communication and motivation.
  • Excellent people skills enabling strong relationships internally and externally to be built and maintained.
  • Experience of assessing and managing operational risk associated with firearms and deer management. Knowledge of the relevant Health & Safety and compliance requirements.
