SODA Reader - Photography (4822)
SODA – School of Digital Arts
The School of Digital Arts is our response to, and an investment in, screen-based business and technologies. It will create a digital skills powerhouse that will host a diverse programme of degree apprenticeships, continuing professional development, work-based training, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and resources. It will build on the award-winning strengths of the Manchester School of Art, and bring together creative and craft disciplines, technical and scientific skills, industry partnerships and global research to train the next generation of talent, who will ensure that the UK continues to compete on an international scale.
Opened in September of 2021, our new purpose-built £35m School will work closely with key cultural and industry partners including: Red Productions, BBC, ITV and HOME to ensure that Greater Manchester has the skills base needed to support its continued growth as a centre of cultural capital and creative innovation. It is estimated that the School could generate an annual boost of £13 million for the local economy. SODA has been awarded £14.9m of Government funding through the Greater Manchester Combined Authority - which has been matched by the University.
Reader – Photography
We are looking to appoint a Reader in Photography, with post holders expected to work towards a promotion to Professor, typically within a period of four to five years.
The candidate will have clear vision and drive for the future direction of digital photographic practices
and how this vision can be realised in the context of SODA, which is a leading School of Digital Arts in one of Europe's fastest growing digital cities. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a transdisciplinary approach to photography through their own practice and to have significant knowledge of and engagement with leading-edge critical theory. Candidates' portfolios will include contributions to the understanding of the complexities of the digitally networked image through journal, book and conference papers.
Working at SODA and leading in the area of expanded photography means that you will inspire, lead and support colleagues in developing a strong digital research culture and influence new pedagogic approaches and practices within the school. Experience of teaching and learning across UG and PGT, both physical and online, with clear evidence of outstanding communication and teaching practice skills, is crucial. Experience of developing partnerships in the cultural and/or digital industries is also important in SODA given the connectivity of the school to regional, national and international industry. With state-of-the-art photographic studios, SODA is ambitious to expand research and industry engagement to match our teaching excellence. The Reader will support this through contribution to teaching as well as research and/or knowledge exchange.
Please note that this position is for 37 hours per week, or 1.0 FTE.
