PDP Transport Planners- careers with purpose creating safer and sustainable communities for Surrey.

The starting salary for this role is £27,991 per annum based on working 36 hours per week, with potential for this to rise up to a maximum of £39,246 per annum as you develop your experience and demonstrate the required skills to progress through the salary points and banding.

The Transport Planning and Major Transport Project Teams are looking for a Graduate Transport Planner. These teams sit within the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure (ETI) directorate and lead the Council’s thinking on transport policies and major projects.

Our professional development programme (PDP) enables you to work whilst undertaking a sponsored professional qualification at a post-graduate level, click here for an example. The course duration is between about 2-3 years. You will benefit from paid time off to study and from an accelerated pay progression upon meeting your learning objectives. Mentoring is provided by experienced colleagues and progression will be regularly monitored through one-to-one meetings.

As a graduate Transport Planner, you will be working with Transport Planners, Engineers, Project Managers, Elected Members and Contractors for the development and review of transport strategies and major transport projects.

Key day to day activity that you could typically support with includes:

  • Supporting Transport Planners with project preparations
  • Helping to create strategy documents
  • Assisting with the preparation of consultation documents

We are in the process of formalising our new Local Transport Plan (LTP) too, which sets out our vision and ambition for rethinking travel in Surrey and will contribute to the creation of healthier and more sustainable communities. About You

To be shortlisted, your CV and supporting statement will clearly evidence:

  • Educated to Degree or NVQ qualification at level 5/6 in subjects such as Civil Engineering, Geography or Planning.
  • To be working toward or willing to work toward a professional qualification, with membership of a suitable professional body i.e. the RTPI, ICE, CIHT, IHE or TPS e.g. joining at Graduate Member level.
  • Awareness of Transport and Highways policies and current highway and traffic regulations and documentation consistent with the training and development guidance issued by professional bodies listed above.
  • Ability to undertake investigations, analysis and research into a wide range of strategy, transport and planning issues in order to inform new and existing policy, strategies, briefings, projects and guidance. This will involve the preparation of documents and providing transport policy/strategy advice to develop Transport Strategies and Major scheme business cases.
  • Ability to assist on the design, organising and attending public consultation/exhibitions to seek stakeholder consensus on projects and transport policy and strategy.
