The Corner School is a specialist school for Children with Social Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH) needs, graded good by Ofsted in February 2022, and run by the charity Unlocking Potential.

We have children in both key stage 1 and 2 and we believe that every child can learn and enjoy a fulfilling school life, regardless of their social, emotional and mental health needs.

Our dedicated team of teachers, Teaching Assistants and therapists work together to develop personalised, dynamic support for each learner enabling them to grow in their own unique way. We offer a safe and nurturing environment and the stability needed to gain an emotional balance and to develop their self-esteem and resilience.

The Post:

The Role:

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Child Therapist who understands what it takes to develop a whole-school therapeutic approach within an alternative provision to transform children’s life chances and unlock their potential.

Our Corner School children have experienced various life challenges and have complex social, emotional and mental health needs; many of them have an EHCP or are in the process of obtaining one. They have often struggled to access mainstream education and may have had an adverse response to therapy offered in the past.

Parents or carers will often have experienced their own challenges in relation to their children’s education and may be wary of therapy to begin with. We believe in the value and importance of building relationships with parents/carers at a pace and approach that they can manage, by coming alongside them to strengthen relationships with their child and school staff.

We are seeking someone with a strong integration of theory into practice, who has experience of shaping the therapeutic ethos and philosophy of a school community, so that therapeutic thinking infuses interactions at all levels between staff, children and parents/carers and behaviour is understood as a communication.

Along with passion for the value of the therapeutic relationships and the power of direct therapy, you will promote a flexible, innovative approach to respond to emerging needs of children, parents and staff on any given day. You will be able to work in a self-directed and attuned way, to find opportunities to empower and therapeutically inform those working with the children we support, including the school team around the child, other professionals within the network and parents and carers.

You will combine elements from the latest understanding in child development, neuroscience, emotional regulation and trauma-informed practice. Some of our children will access 1:1 therapy with ease; others will require a flexible, tailored approach, that may begin with other therapeutic input from our UP SaLT or OT or a more generalised approach. There will be the option of delivering weekly 1:1 therapy (or 2:1 therapy where children require an additional adult to be present), small groupwork, and working across the school setting, finding opportunities in classrooms, playgrounds and across the school day to build relationships with children and support staff to improve emotional regulation, in order that children can access 1:1 therapy and develop their resilience in learning and attainment
