Description

The Office for Students (OfS) is the independent regulator of higher education in England, whose aim is to ensure that every student, whatever their background, has a fulfilling experience of higher education that enriches their lives and careers. It does so by regulating the higher education providers on its register to make sure they are delivering positive outcomes for their students and value for money; where they are not, it takes action.

Reporting to the Head and Deputy Head of Legal Services, the OfS is now looking for a Principal Legal Adviser for Enforcement to join the team. The aim of this role is to lead on the provision of legal advice and support on a broad range of legal matters. They will have a particular focus on OfS’s investigatory and enforcement functions, but could lead and advise across any legal issue relevant to the OfS, including advisory workstreams.

Candidates will hold a professional qualification as a solicitor or a barrister with significant experience in legal practice areas relevant to the OfS such as public law, UK consumer protection law, investigation and enforcement in a regulatory context, litigation cases involving judicial review and/or regulatory appeals, and the interpretation of regulatory rules such as licence conditions or equivalent. Capable of delivering at pace in often contentious legal proceedings, candidates will be able to quickly analyse differing views and provide objective and impartial evidence-based advice in a clear and compelling way to boards and senior executives. They will have experience leading teams and developing staff, and demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.

The OfS regulates the higher education sector on behalf of all students. We value diversity and the wealth of perspectives, experience and ideas that it brings to our work and we strive to embed equality of opportunity in everything we do. We recruit based on fair and open competition and welcome applications from candidates regardless of age, disability, race and ethnicity, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation and socio-economic background. To attract the widest possible field of qualified applicants, flexible working, for example job share and part time working, apply to this role.
