Description

Our client is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that bridges the gap between industry, government, academia, and research. They take a whole systems view of the energy sector, helping to identify and address innovation priorities and market barriers, in order to decarbonise the energy system at the lowest cost.

Due to current expansion, the company now has an exciting career opportunity available. They are seeking a National Energy Systems Modelling Specialist to join their fast-growing team.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in Python and/or optimisation modelling, or experience with other programming languages & software environments.

You will have strong technical modelling capabilities, complemented by a comprehensive understanding of the UK's National Energy System, and have a consultative approach that allows you to work effectively in a collaborative environment to deliver impactful solutions and evidence to clients/ businesses.

You will have some significant national energy systems modelling experience, or alternatively you may feel that you are ready to step up into a role that will enable you to model complex national scale energy scenarios and whilst doing so gain a deep understanding in the use of a range of both mature and evolving inhouse modelling tools.

So, if you would like to continue to build upon your national energy system modelling experience and/or become an expert in this field and make a real meaningful impact on the Energy Transition, then this opportunity could be for you.

Responsibilities

This opportunity will focus on two key areas, as stated below.

Focus Area 1:

Expertly interpreting modelling outputs and delivering high quality and robust work based on those results, will be a key focus area of this opportunity.

Clients include both public and private organisations and modelling is used to support policymaking by government, decision making relating to national and local energy system infrastructure and more effective targeting of innovation investment by businesses and government.

In tackling this focus area, you will utilise your expertise in analytical/mathematical techniques & effective communication skills, to interpret and deliver valuable insights in various forms, including reports, specific technical input into projects & programmes and attending/speaking at various workshops & events.

Your ability to consult with various clients and colleagues to translate needs and requirements into more detailed technical model specifications will also be important in tackling this area and you will also be expected to provide technical leadership on projects and support to others within the team.

Focus Area 2:

Our client already has a suite of excellent modelling assets; however, refinement of those models is an ongoing process to ensure they become ever more capable, robust, and efficient to exploit. Also, as they aim to answer the critical questions for the energy system transition, they will inevitably be creating new modelling tools.

Your first-rate capabilities in developing, validating, deploying, and maintaining models will come to the fore in this focus area, not so much in terms of creating brand new models but more around implementing new functionality/technical specifications etc. to respond to specific project requirements as they arise, or supporting external organisations and other internal teams with model refinements that help answer or respond to a particular question or challenges.

If you would like to make a real difference, love a challenge, excited by the opportunity to do worthwhile work, please apply today.

Salary: 40-50k + Benefits.
