Description

Senior Environmental Law and Advice Officer

Salary: £35,895 - £40,613

Location: Worcester (with options for flexible working)

Contract: Permanent

Introduction

The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) is a new public body, established to improve and conserve the natural environment. We hold the government to account on its environmental commitments and advance environmental governance through independent oversight. We also provide advice on environmental law and deal with public authority compliance. With us, you’ll be playing your part in crucial work that promotes the environment’s importance.

The Role

This is a rare opportunity to help build a new function from the ground up and shape how the OEP operates in its first few years of existence.

Joining our Monitoring Environmental Law and Advice (MELA) team, you’ll report on the implementation of environmental law by government bodies. As part of this, you’ll decide whether or not a particular implementation delivers policy intent and make recommendations for improvements if needed.

You’ll also provide credible, high-quality advice to be used by wider OEP teams and presented to government, Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Gathering information and evidence is an important aspect of the role, and as such you’ll regularly manage stakeholders such as specialist external experts and authorities.

Who we’re looking for

You’ll have experience developing and assessing environmental law. You should also be able to deliver complex, high-quality advice and ideally carry out horizon scanning, keeping us up to date with policy developments.

You’ll have strong analytical skills, excellent communications skills and a flexible, adaptable mindset. We’re also looking for candidates who can solve problems, manage risks and develop strong working relationships.

While we don’t require a university degree, you should at least have the equivalent knowledge of an undergraduate degree relating to the natural environment.

About us

At OEP, you can take advantage of a wide range of benefits including flexible working, generous annual leave, outstanding learning and development, our occupational health service and a huge range of retail discounts.
