Summary

Are you a proven manager of collections or houses, who has a love of history and archaeology? We are looking for someone who can bring their enthusiasm and knowledge of conservation and collections care to our team, so we can improve how we care for, interpret and present our properties. You’ll also be part of the day to day operation of running of Chedworth Roman Villa, working collaboratively with the whole team to create a memorable experience for our visitors.

What it's like to work here

This role will be split four days per week at Chedworth Roman Villa, and one day per week at Lodge Park.

Chedworth Roman Villa

Built in the Fourth Century AD, Chedworth Roman Villa was rediscovered by the Victorians over 150 years ago. Leading the way in archaeology and conservation, Chedworth provides a unique insight into life during the Roman period in Britain.

Lodge Park

John 'Crump' Dutton built this 17th-century grandstand, fuelled by his passion for deer coursing, gambling, banqueting and entertaining.

Lodge Park became the National Trust's first restoration project in 1998 and relied on archaeological evidence to return the building to its former glory. It's situated approximately two and a half miles from the village of Sherborne and the wider Sherborne estate, the other side of the A40. What you'll be doing

With collections care responsibility for both Chedworth Roman Villa and Lodge Park, you’ll manage volunteers and implement preventive conservation and cleaning programmes at both sites to ensure excellent standards of care while delivering strategies to improve conservation. You’ll be hands on with the Chedworth mosaics, learning about the innovative building which houses them and contributing research to improve our management and care of these important in situ objects.

You’ll be responsible for the planning and implementation of conservation projects, collections care, and will contribute to the opening of the properties ensuring appropriate resources are in place to provide a consistent and excellent visitor experience.

You'll collect and accurately record information to inform our understanding of the sites and the collections and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve, interpret and present the properties. Leading by example you’ll ensure a culture of excellent customer care, engaging our visitors with conservation and the values and behaviours of the National Trust.

Who we're looking for

• Has a good understanding of Museum Accreditation standards.

• Demonstrates a working knowledge of preventive conservation and its practical application.

• Has great people skills and experience of working with and managing staff and volunteers.

• Has operational experience of collections management and care in an historic environment.

• Good knowledge of Health and Safety and Emergency Procedures.

• Be well organised and attentive to detail.

• Have excellent customer service and communication skills.

• Has an understanding of environmental monitoring systems, such as Hanwell.

• An understanding of or interest in archaeological collections.
