Description

Project Manager
£32,000 per year
Full-time, 35 hours per week
Fixed-term contract for 18 months
Home working, based in Scotland or Wales

Our client is on a mission to give children and young people from disadvantaged communities the reading and writing skills to succeed in life. You could join them as Project Manager at their Hubs in Scotland and Wales.

What you’ll be doing

Our client’s Hubs are local, tailored responses that brings the whole community together to address reading and writing needs. Our client has multiple hubs across the country, each with a ten-year commitment to create better life chances for young people in the area through system and behaviour change. This work is based on collective impact theory and our client’s national expertise.

This new role will be responsible for Hubs in Scotland and Wales as part of our client’s commitment to support low reading and writing levels across the UK and learn from working in different nations. You will be part of the Hubs national team, which currently has six people who between them are responsible for the network of Hubs and regional campaigns across the country.

You will lead the set up and development of Hub activity, including convening strategic steering groups and agreeing milestones and targets. You will manage a local Hub Manager in each area, supporting them to develop and deliver local activities and engage volunteers. You will also work with the Head of Local Areas to support data analysis and secure additional funding to sustain and grow this work and support other Hubs as they are developed.

What they are looking for

You will need to be an excellent project manager, with budget management skills and experience of partnership management, community engagement and event planning and delivery. Experience of working in Scotland or Wales would be an advantage, bringing greater expertise to the national team in addition to the local knowledge of Hub Managers. You will need the drive and passion to help build a strong presence in both countries and establish strong networks of partners at all levels.

Why this work is so vital

Poor reading and writing skills and the resulting inequality are not inevitable. Our client improves the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of those who need it most, giving them the best possible chance of success.

Our client makes society fairer. Poor skills create social and economic inequality. The one in six adults in the UK with poor reading and writing skills earn less, are less likely to vote and more likely to experience health inequalities.

They enable social mobility. A child without reading and writing skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they will be locked out of the job market. The pattern is intergenerational and starts at birth.

Our client’s work is targeted at communities with the highest levels of disadvantage and the lowest levels of reading and writing. They support thousands of schools and early years settings, bringing in wonderful partners and the nation’s best publishers who bring literacy alive. They campaign to make reading and writing a priority for the nation’s leaders. Their research and analysis makes them a leading authority and drives their interventions.

What they offer you

As well as a competitive salary, our client offers benefits including a generous leave allowance totalling 39 days (including bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year), pension contributions of 8% of annual salary, a cycle to work scheme, employee assistance programme and other health and wellbeing benefits.

They support flexible working and promote a workplace where you can be yourself and contribute to their success, whoever you are.
