Description

1. Context The board of Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is looking to appoint a number of Trustees to help shape its artistic and educational character and strategic direction; challenge where necessary; and help to provide effective and constructive governance. We particularly welcome candidates who offer expertise in one or more of the following areas: artistic practice, screen and recorded media, higher education, law and Wales’ development as a nation. We are keen to diversify our board and would welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences. The College is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive environment for all our stakeholders. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of Trustees, staff and students from many different backgrounds who have the ambition to create a College which seeks to fulfil our social, cultural and artistic obligation to Cardiff, Wales, and the world.

2. The Organisation Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, situated in Cardiff between Bute Park and North Road, is one of the UK’s eight Royal colleges and drama schools and has been providing specialist higher education training in music and drama at the highest level for nearly 75 years. Training through performance, exhibition and industry collaborations, we work to a distinctive model that treats our students, drawn from Wales, the UK and internationally, as young professionals from the moment they arrive in Cardiff. It places them in communities and engages the public in their work at every opportunity.

Ten years ago, the College’s relationship with audiences radically opened up and expanded when, following transformative capital investment, we launched our beautiful and cutting-edge arts centre with its new gallery, theatre and world class recital hall. We developed a wide-ranging performance programme that supports the academic and performance needs of our students while offering our annual audiences – now a steady 55,000 attendees – year-round opportunities to enjoy and take part in a more diverse range of performing arts than would otherwise be available in Cardiff.

In January 2022 we extended our work into Cardiff City centre scheduling learning, teaching, rehearsals and some small productions in the Old Library. We expect to be able to share more plans about our exciting ambitions for our work at the Old Library later in the summer when we conclude our long-term lease discussions with Cardiff Council.

With the constant flow of talent that comes into our creative community – the largest in Wales – and by combining the roles of educator and arts centre, we present 500 separate events each year, from musical theatre, concerts and opera to newly commissioned plays, puppetry performances and exhibitions, all experienced in an architecturally and acoustically exceptional environment.

We bring Welsh language culture to life all year round, actively celebrating and promoting the rich legacy of the language across music and drama as well as commissioning new contemporary works from Welsh language artists. We are the biggest producer of theatre in Wales, offer the most Candidate Brief, July 2022 Trustee, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (HG/MD 04 July 2022) Page 3 significant chamber music performance programme and our regular AmserJazzTime sets are the most popular sessions in Wales filling the foyer on Friday evenings with a diverse community of all ages, keen to experience our young jazz artists in a welcoming and sociable environment.

The College attracts the best creative talent from across the globe. As Wales’ national conservatoire, we fire imagination and drive innovation, offering training to almost 1000 actors, musicians, designers, technicians and arts managers from more than 40 countries.

Our students’ extraordinary talent and potential is fused with exceptional teaching and unrivalled industry links, to bring dreams to life. Creative ambition and collaboration are central to our excellence. Our students are immersed in a live industry environment from the moment they arrive.

We nourish our future professionals, so they push new boundaries and make their mark in the creative industries, aspiring to brilliant careers. The future starts here.

We are committed to creating a workforce that is representative of society. Currently, people from ethnically diverse communities, those who self-identify as disabled and neurodiverse and transgender individuals are under-represented, so we are keen to hear from candidates from these under-represented groups.
