Contract: Permanent, 35 hours per week (flexible working requests will be considered)

Salary: £62,000 - £85,000 per annum

We seek to recruit a passionate and highly skilled individual to lead the DMPK group based at our Babraham Research Campus facilities in Cambridge, who will provide strategic insight and support across CRUK's multiple drug discovery sites. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the DMPK strategy for our new organisation, and to work with cross functional teams both internally and externally to develop drugs to improve the lives of cancer patients.

Reporting directly to the VP, Chemistry & DMPK, you will set the vision for, and lead, the DMPK team. As the DMPK Leader, you will lead and drive a high-performing team to provide all aspects of DMPK expertise to projects. You will be a recognised and passionate leader, able to represent the department across a broad range of therapeutic projects and cross-site initiatives, and externally. You will drive scientific and technical innovation, including through external collaboration and partnership. We are seeking a strong leader who can articulate a vision for our mission and set direction and inspire commitment for preclinical Discovery.

What will you be doing?

  • Design, propose and execute innovative experiments which influence projects or the overall direction of DMPK science.
  • Maintain good awareness of external developments in the DMPK field, apply these to projects and proactively suggest and evaluate new techniques
  • Design and implement new ways of working that have a direct impact on data quality and productivity
  • Contribute to R&D strategy
  • Effectively manage in vitro and in vivo outsourcing.
  • Effectively prioritise and co-ordinates several areas of work.
  • Lead and drive a high-performing team to provide all aspects of DMPK expertise
  • Manage internal expertise, capacity and resources to drive governance and decision-making regarding scientific portfolio support and technology development
  • Communicates and shares knowledge and expertise effectively within and across departments.
  • Presents and clarifies results across departments and to alliance partners.
  • Ensure a high level of data integrity within DMPK group.
  • Lead drug discovery projects where appropriate.
  • Be a recognised and passionate leader, able to represent the department across a broad range of therapeutic projects and cross-site initiatives, and also externally.
  • Drive scientific and technical innovation, including through external collaboration and partnership.
  • Ensure equality and diversity is celebrated and considered as part of all decisions taken.

Who are we looking for?

  • Qualified to either Degree or PhD level in a Life Sciences discipline as well as extensive experience in drug metabolism, bioanalysis, pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling.
  • A proven ability to form close and effective relationships with colleagues at all levels (both internal and in partner organisations) and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A track record of working on diverse projects, delivering compounds to pre-clinical and clinical development. Experience of building mechanistic disease models, and / or quantitative systems pharmacology expertise, is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience of using cutting edge approaches to compound profiling and prediction of human dose and PK parameters.
  • An excellent knowledge of all aspects of ADMET and PK to influence experimental design and data interpretation across a range of projects.
  • Experience of working on projects at all stages of drug discovery from hit to lead to the clinic.
  • Experience of managing in vitro and in vivo outsourcing.
  • Proven track record of recruiting, inspiring and developing a world-class group, and optimising team performance in a highly matrixed discovery project environment.
  • Significant experience and career progression in pre-clinical drug discovery, with deep knowledge of the use of DMPK science to aid translation from model systems through to clinical dose prediction.
  • Significant external reputation in DMPK, gained through professional recognition, external presentations and publication in high-impact journals.
  • Extensive experience of establishing and leading external collaborations and technology change projects to advance organisational capability.
  • Track record of delivering results across a diverse project portfolio by driving strategic, scientific, financial and people performance.
