Description
Summary
At a time when people value nature and heritage more than ever, we are looking for a Property Curator to join us at Oxburgh Hall, to bring the history and significance of our collections and places into even greater focus.
Our collections include outstanding internationally important textiles, decorative arts, furniture and paintings and other works of art, as well as highly significant industrial, photographic, archaeological and archival collections.
Please submit both a CV and Cover Letter with your application
What it's like to work here
Oxburgh is a romantic 15th century manor house, home to the Bedingfeld family for 500 years. With its castle-like exterior and panoramic views, the team loves working in this beautiful environment.
Oxburgh’s contents reveal the collecting habits of the Bedingfeld family, from the Medieval period to the 20th century, with the family’s Catholicism expressed strongly throughout.
We are coming to the end of a £6million conservation project that has uncovered beautiful treasures and enabled us to learn more about the house than ever before, and in 2017 we acquired 126 acres of land which once formed part of the original estate and are in the process of restoring it back to parkland.
What you'll be doing
This role is vital to ensuring that our most significant collections, properties and gardens are enjoyed as much as possible by a wide-ranging audience of visitors and members.
As Property Curator, you'll have a holistic approach to understanding the collections, with a knowledge and focussed expertise, that will connect into the wider narratives, stories, and themes of local, national, British, and global histories.
You’ll have a vision for how you can work collaboratively to ensure the property and its important collections are able to connect with new audiences, including those who might not regularly visit, by utilising well considered and innovative interpretive techniques.
You’ll have a strong sense of how you could transform the core offer while respecting the authentic spirit of place, particularly in terms of presentation and engaging interpretation for a range of audiences. You’ll be able to see ways of drawing strong connections between the property and its collections, gardens, and parklands with the wider cultural landscape it sits within.
This is an operational role which will require you to be on site regularly and based at the properties. You’ll need to be able to help provide cover for night duty on an ad hoc basis. On these occasions you’ll required to be within 20 minutes of Oxburgh.
Who we're looking for
You'll need to have the following experience:
- In-depth understanding and experience of working with historic collections and properties
- Good experience of collections management and care, and understanding of taking an informed and holistic approach to conservation management
- Experience of team leadership, with a strong understanding of how to work collaboratively
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences
- Capability to undertake, lead on, interpret, and respond to external and internal research, intelligence, and analysis.
- Enthusiasm, knowledge and inspiration as well as a practical, pragmatic and sensible approach to problem solving
- Relevant formal academic / professional / vocational qualifications in Art History, Museum Studies and related fields
