Senior Research Associate in Computer Programming to address the Climate Change and Biodiversity Emergencies

Do you have the computer programming skills to help us tackle the climate change and biodiversity emergencies?

You will create computer programs and associated spatial datasets on biodiversity and natural-capital for integration within two integrated assessment modelling platforms,OpenCLIM - Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and PROVIDE - Strategies to global temperature overshooting risks (provide-h2020.eu), which are designed to inform decision making about climate change mitigation and adaptation at UK, EU and global scales. PROVIDE is an EU-funded project exploring the dynamics of climate change related risks and adaptation under alternative climate change mitigation scenarios that result in a temporary ‘overshooting’ of the Paris Agreement targets to limit global warming to 1.5-2°C above preindustrial levels. OpenCLIM is an integrated assessment modelling project, funded by the UKRI Climate Resilience Programme, and is delivering a prototype national simulation methodology of climate change risks and adaptation options for the UK.

You will have substantial programming skills in R and extensive experience in working with spatial data (both raster and vector). The tasks will involve writing and modifying code, transforming, resampling and mining spatial data. You will develop new programs to calculate risk to natural capital under varying levels of warming (using existing raster data layers and equations). You will also have experience working in distributed computing (e.g., HPC/DAFNI) and/or cloud-based computing environments. A working knowledge of Apache (or equivalent) and Javascript programming, especially Leaflet or other swipe map technology would be a plus as would knowledge of MaxENT (species distribution modelling). The computing skills could come from previous employment or postgraduate education. A detailed subject knowledge in either biodiversity, climate change, or interdisciplinary integrated assessment modelling/programs capable of leading to independent, original contributions to the subject area would also be desirable.

This full-time post is available on a fixed term basis from 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter for up to 21.5 months, ending 12 July 2024.
