Make decisions that will underpin UK life.

The challenge

The Home Office is at the heart of UK life. Keeping the country safe, protecting and enhancing our economy and making key decisions that will impact on our cultural make-up, we handle everything from immigration to national security. Our Customer Services Group (CSG) is tasked with Asylum & Protection, Her Majesty’s Passport Office and UK Visas & Immigration, so the scope to pursue a fascinating career path with us is quite exceptional.

The role

As a member of our Visas, Status and Information Services team, you will play a vital role in making decisions in a fast-paced environment. With a large number of roles available across numerous teams, the challenges you take on could vary considerably. For example, you might handle applications from foreign nationals who wish to live, work, study or seek refuge in the UK, or you might oversee applications from UK citizens wishing to secure a passport. Alternatively, you might consider which organisations should be allowed to bring non-EEA nationals to work and study in the UK. With plenty of training and support from experienced colleagues, you will therefore:

  • Join a team focused on visits, work, study, marriage or family, in which you will manage a complex variety of cases. Meeting deadlines and targets, you will see to it that you are consistently delivering an excellent level of customer service.
  • Check online applications, and use complex guidance and policy to make carefully-considered decisions on their outcomes. This will include assessing a variety of documentation.
  • Provide feedback on your decisions in a clear way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Alternatively, you might be asked to line manage colleagues, or take part in cross-cutting operations. If you take on this latter option, you could be involved in challenges such as those relating to supplier relationships, customer relations, supporting Directors’ offices or planning and performance activity within the business.

About you

  • You will have strong team-playing and communication skills (both verbal and written), with the ability to clearly explain your decisions.
  • Good IT skills are essential, and you will be comfortable using Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • With good organisation skills, we will expect you to meet tight deadlines and targets, and you will not be phased by working under pressure.
  • If you have experience of working in a casework environment or handling casework, that would be desirable, though is not essential.

In turn, we can provide you with a great work-life balance, that is enhanced by a competitive benefits package and the scope to pursue your long-term career goals.

About the Home Office

The first duty of the government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure. The Home Office has been at the front line of this effort since 1782. As such, we play a fundamental role in maintaining the security and economic prosperity of the UK. The Home Office leads on immigration and passports, refugee protection, counter-terrorism, policing, fire services, and crime and drugs policy.

Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) enables the Home Office to keep the UK safe and secure. We design and build the services that help people apply for visas or passports; support policing and counter-terrorism operations; and protect the UK’s borders.

This is an exciting time to be at the Home Office. You’ll have a chance to shape the future and support our mission to deliver exceptional public services that work for everyone.

Our work is guided by these principles:

• we put user needs first

• we value delivery and outcomes over process

• we work in the open
