Our client, has an exciting opportunity for Peer Workers on either a full time, or part time, permanent basis based in Mid and North Essex - Tendring, Colchester, Braintree, Maldon & Chelmsford. In return you will receive a competitive salary of £19,305 per annum.

About the Peer Worker role:

The Essex Outreach Service offers free, short term help to people aged over 16 who need support around their housing. They provide advice and guidance to help people feel more confident and able to manage independently. The support includes help with housing and homelessness issues, rent arrears, benefit claims and advice, help with managing money and budgeting, employment, training and volunteering opportunities. Support for drug and alcohol problems, getting support with mental health and accessing care and support services in Essex for health and wellbeing.

What they are looking for in their Peer Workers:

  • The ability to speak with customers and team members open and honestly about personal experiences. Sharing barriers that you have overcome
  • Personal experience of being in the criminal justice system whilst being homeless or at risk of homelessness
  • Personal experience in accessing suitable accommodation and maintaining a tenancy
  • Personal experience in managing or overcoming mental health problems
  • Committed to providing excellent customer service at all times
  • Passionate about making a real difference in people’s lives, and supporting them to be as independent, safe, healthy and happy as they possibly can be
  • Kind with empathy and respect the individual characteristics and needs of a very diverse range of customers
  • A sense of humour, an approachable manner and the resilience to cope with a busy, challenging and emotive job

What you can expect to be doing as their Peer Worker:

  • Drawing on personal experiences of being in the criminal justice system with mental health problems whilst being homeless or at risk of homelessness. Helping others to develop coping skills
  • Providing emotional support to customers
  • Helping people to identify their strengths, personal interests and goals
  • Supporting people to understand their rights and be able to make choices with an understanding of their responsibilities
  • Prioritising personal safety and work within the company safeguarding procedures
  • Helping to Identify, assess and manage risks in accordance with company policies
  • Developing mutual and reciprocal relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Acting as positive role models to peers, demonstrating the possibilities of overcoming homelessness
  • Providing practical support including attending appointments at tenancy sign up and in the local community to access services
  • Working in 1:1 settings providing peer support where necessary
