The Salters’ Company, reincorporated by Royal Charter in 1607 by James 1, ranks ninth of the Twelve Great City Livery Companies, an order of precedence established in 1515. Medieval in origin, the Company predates a licence granted by Richard II in 1394 to found a Fraternity named the Guild of Corpus Christi. There are now 110 Livery companies undertaking charitable, trade and professional activities, 10 of which have been created this century.

The Company’s four main activities today are: education, philanthropy, fellowship, and involvement in the civic life of the City of London, including the election of its Lord Mayor and Sheriffs. The Flagship of the Company’s education activities is the Salters’ Institute of Industrial Chemistry (the Salters’ Institute) founded in 1918. The Institute plays a major role in the support of chemistry teaching, the encouragement of young people to pursue careers in the UK chemical and allied industries, and the promotion of science education.

The Head of Finance role

The Head of Finance assists the Clerk in the executive management and running of the Company as part of a Senior Management Team (SMT) and directly line manages Finance. It has a major role in providing advice and guidance to the Master (Chair of the Board of Directors of the Salters’ Management Company Ltd) who changes annually, the Clerk and the Court (non-executive trustees of the Worshipful Company of Salters’) who are the ultimate authority.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing advice to the Clerk, Master and the Budget Audit and Accounts Committee on all financial aspects of the Company’s and its charities’ business;
  • Acting as Secretary to the Budget, Audit & Accounts, Committee and Investment Committee;
  • Acting as Secretary to the Trustees of the Salters’ Company Pension Scheme, supervising the work of the Scheme’s managers and advisers. Keeping the Scheme Rules and Members’ Handbook up to date, preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and presenting the accounts for annual audit;
  • Developing and managing financial systems and processes which promote high standards of financial control and efficiently to meet the changing requirements of the Company and associated charities;
  • Developing and managing efficient systems for financial planning and budgetary control including preparing and presenting a medium term financial plan which effectively promotes the Company’s objectives, appraising options for the future development of the Company’s business and advising on financial implications and affordable spending levels;
  • Preparing and presenting draft budgets which promote the implementation of the Company’s plans;
  • Advising on the requirements of good corporate governance, in particular the Companies Act and the Charities Act;
  • Preparing such reports and returns as are required by the Inland Revenue, HMRC, Companies House Data and other Registrars;
  • Managing, reviewing and negotiating contracts with the Company’s catering, building maintence and security partners;
  • Managing and reviewing the Company’s IT arrangments through staff and the external provider;
  • Maintaining liaison with the Company’s Merchant and Clearing Bankers, Investment, Property and Pension Managers, Surveyor, Accounting and Taxation Advisors, Solicitors and Insurance Brokers and other Finance Directors of other livery Companies, particularly the Great Twelve;
  • Attending Company entertainments and generally concerned with the activities of the Company.
  • Representing the Company externally to other Livery Companies, City institutions, investment advisers and other organisations as required.

The Candidate You will be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, CIMA, ACCA) with strong overall financial management experience. Strong technical finance understanding is required for this role, along with an ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at all levels. An understanding of the charity sector is desirable for the role. The ideal candidate will have proven experience within a similar role.

Specific characteristics will include:

  • Stature, credibility and integrity;
  • Proven sector awareness, knowledge, skills and experience with a willingness to learn;
  • Proven skills and experience of establishing and managing key relationships;
  • Able to take day-to-day decisions while accepting direction through the Clerk, Management Board and Committee Chairs;
  • First class communicator, with strong intellect, sound judgment and social skills; able to listen and to foster consensus;
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a small team to help deliver strategic objectives;
  • Good diplomacy skills, with a willingness to sometimes work beyond normal business hours and to attend a variety of Company and charitable functions, some of which may occur at weekends; and
  • An understanding of and interest in the history, ceremony and protocol of the Company particularly in relation to the City Corporation and other Livery Companies.
