Scope of the Job

Responsible to: All BA/MA programmes at SPAA, Lead Singing Tutor, Programme Leader – Musical Theatre and the Executive Director.

Responsible for: Singing provision within undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Works Closely with: Lead Singing Tutor and other Singing/Musical Theatre faculty.

Job Purpose

The Singing Tutor is responsible for direct teaching and planning within singing related activities at SPAA. The Singing Tutor has a key role in delivering safe practice within the delivery of modules containing singing related teaching. This role requires a skillset in which the candidate has extensive practical experience in their field but also has some experience of module delivery. This team is led to work succinctly alongside the other departments within the performance courses and the wider faculty at Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. The Singing Tutor reports directly to the Lead Singing Tutor.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and deliver assigned one-to-one, group teaching, and project modules. Reporting directly to Lead Singing Tutor, Programme Leader – Musical Theatre, and ultimately the Executive Director. Safe practice will be at the forefront of practice alongside developing innovative teaching, which connects with a multidisciplinary training culture. Collaborate with the singing faculty to facilitate singing module assessments with clear feedback. Potentially assist with some global outreach and audition procedures to maintain high levels within student recruitment. Share practice and pedagogy with other members of the faculty. Develop schemes of work to comply with SPAA’s teaching and learning policies. Cultivate advanced practice within singing through continued CPD. The Singing Tutor may be required to undertake additional duties relevant to the delivery of the Academy’s programmes.

Key Interactions

As part of the SPAA team, working closely with all faculty to ensure our students are provided with the highest levels of teaching and learning support during their course of study. Through the departmental channels within the Academy, the SPAA team will facilitate these fundamental practices ensuring courses are running effectively and efficiently for the benefit of the students and the wider arts community in Sharjah.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

Excellent skills in singing pedagogy (particularly full, industry relevant, Musical Theatre “cross-over”, from contemporary to legit styles). Competent piano/accompanying skills. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work with students from varying cultural backgrounds. Ability to teach a variety of vocal pedagogical approaches. Wide knowledge of Musical Theatre repertoire. HE/Drama school teaching. Direct industry experience. Appropriate qualification at degree level or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience via industry or professional practice. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multinational team. Ability to work on a flexible schedule. Flexible approach to working and developing the post. A determined and efficient individual who is a team player ready to lead, learn and grow.

Desirable:

Professional performance or creative team experience in Musical Theatre. Advanced piano/accompanying skills. Ability to run performance workshops. Ability to add into a creative team for productions. A wider understanding of professional industry practice and knowledge. Potential ability to feed into other Programme disciplines within the Academy. Potential ability to teach other disciplines if qualified. Master’s degree related to subject specialism.
