Description

Background: The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is a membership organisation dedicated to promoting the understanding and use of statistics for the public good.

We are looking to hire a campaigns and policy manager to work in our small, dynamic communications and policy team. Initially the main focus of the role will be driving a new project focusing on “good enough” statistics. This work is funded by FTX Future Fund and is prompted by some challenges that have emerged during the pandemic: there is a systematic tendency within government to require that statistics and data used for decision-making are near perfect before either presenting them to decision-makers or the public. The post-holder will focus on specific areas of government statistics and communicate with government statisticians, politicians and the wider public to encourage the use of good enough statistics and improve understanding and communication of the uncertainty that is involved.

The post holder will also work to support and develop the other campaign priorities of the Society, on subjects including: the cost of living; education and statistical literacy; equality, diversity and inclusion; climate change and the environment; and Covid-19. This will involve a mixture of conventional policy work, supporting the Society’s groups and committees, convening stakeholders and organising events and potentially quantitative analysis of important policy issues. The role will involve working alongside the Society’s fellows, who are often world experts in the fields of statistics and data.

The ideal candidate will have around five years’ experience or more in public policy or politics roles, and a demonstrable interest in at least one of: statistics and data; science and innovation policy; promoting mathematical or scientific literacy; evidence-based policy making.

Location: The RSS office is located in central London, close to Moorgate and Old Street tube stations. The postholder would need to be able to travel to the office around once per month and – given that the role involves an element of convening stakeholders – potentially slightly more. The RSS office is currently open two days a week as standard, and occasionally more frequently as required for events.

Working hours: 35 per week full-time. Applications for job shares, part-time and flexible working will also be considered.

Holidays: 25 days per annum, plus bank holidays and an additional close down between Christmas and New Year.

Main duties:

  • To manage the Society’s new workstream focusing on good enough statistics – taking it from the scoping and planning stage to delivering the project over the next two years.
  • To support the generation of policy proposals on a range of subjects relevant to statistics, including: Covid-19, education and statistical literacy and government use of statistics and data.
  • To organise and coordinate campaign and policy events on a range of subjects
  • To engage with government bodies, think tanks and other organisations with a relevant policy interest
  • Liaising effectively with members synthesising their insights and compiling effective briefings, reports and other policy documents.
  • To write, co-ordinate or edit relevant RSS policy documents – such as reports, consultation responses or letters
  • To develop relationships with influencers, initially with a focus on government use of statistics.
  • To support communications by working closely with the Media and External Affairs Manager and the Web and Social Media Editor.
  • To provide support to key Society groups including the National Statistics Advisory Group, the Education Policy Advisory Group, the Academic Affairs Advisory Group and the Covid-19 Task Force.
  • The Society can provide training to develop skills in data analysis and visualisations – if this is of interest there may be opportunities to develop data visualisations and graphics for use in reports or on social media
