Description
We’re looking for a General Manager to lead Sheffield Park & Garden, an internationally significant landscape garden in the heart of East Sussex, famous for its Autumn Colour.
As an inspiring and inclusive leader, you’ll engage with a wide variety of people to achieve our long-term goals, you’ll continue to develop appealing visitor experiences and grow the business. You’ll also uphold excellent conservation, horticulture and land management standards. You’ll lead the team to make Sheffield Park and Garden a place where every visitor feels welcome and that action is taken to manage the impacts of Climate Change. Even more importantly, you’ll maintain a collaborative environment where people want to work and volunteer.
This is a full time, permanent position.

What it's like to work here
Sheffield Park and Garden is a busy property, it’s in the National Trust’s top 20 for overall visitor numbers, with a strong, forward-thinking team of 45 staff and 150 volunteers. You’ll help to deliver current projects to develop a new garden experience and improve infrastructure. There’s also a small let estate of nine rental properties, commercial income is £2.2 million and growing, with further potential.
What you'll be doing
As General Manager, you’ll lead a dedicated team of Heads of Department across various disciplines. You’ll support and challenge your team to deliver the best possible visitor experience whilst maintaining conservation excellence. It’s a demanding but satisfying job where no two days are the same.
You’ll need to be able to communicate your vision for the property to your team of staff and volunteers, stakeholders and partner organisations. A crucial part of your role will be to relate to people and manage the delivery of your vision through your teams. Income delivery is essential to fund the property’s extensive conservation needs as well as its development potential.
As part of the London and South East region’s ‘Kent and East Sussex’ portfolio of properties, you’ll be working alongside other General Managers caring for similarly high profile and complex property businesses, led by the Assistant Director of Operations.
Who we're looking for
To be shortlisted for this role, you’ll need to be able to demonstrate:
- Experience of running a large visitor-facing business
- Effective leadership, influencing and motivational skills
- Commercial awareness
- Excellent Project Management skills
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
- Experience of managing budgets up to £1 million plus income, across a number of departments
- Understanding of compliance / Health and Safety
