Description

Based in Keswick, Theatre by the Lake (TBTL) is one of the UK’s leading regional theatres and plays an important role in the cultural scene in Cumbria. It is a mid-scale theatre with two auditoria: the Main House with 389 – 424 seats, and a smaller, flexible Studio with around 100 seats. An adjacent café provides enhanced services for theatre customers and visitors and helps support the theatre’s long-term resilience. As a producing theatre, the work we create, commission and share is critical to levelling up access to high quality arts for rural and isolated communities, particularly children and young people, and for developing local talent.

We are looking for an Executive Director to work collaboratively in a joint-leadership role with our Artistic Director. You will be responsible for providing dynamic and inspirational leadership to our management team and to our many external partners and supporting and enabling the Artistic Director to achieve our artistic ambitions.

Exploiting and maximising the myriad opportunities that our work and our location offer to generate earned income, as well as continuing to seek out and develop traditional sources of fundraising, will be a key part of the role. As Executive Director, you will find creative ways to reach and attract new audiences to come to TBTL, ensuring an excellent, high-quality experience for all our customers. The legal and financial wellbeing of the company will be in your hands and you will ensure that our resources – financial, physical, and human – are managed effectively and efficiently.

Our ideal candidate will have the skills and experience to lead a significant, Arts Council England funded, regional producing theatre. You will need excellent interpersonal and communication skills, entrepreneurial and financial acumen, and a genuine commitment to creating and sustaining a culture of inclusivity, accessibility and diversity across all of our activities. This is a demanding and exciting job, so you need to relish the challenges of working at the heart of an ambitious, fast-paced and busy organisation. In addition, it is the perfect opportunity for someone who loves nature and will appreciate and enjoy working in one of the most beautiful areas in the UK.

Theatre by the Lake embraces inclusivity, diversity and equity across our organisation, creating an atmosphere of trust, integrity and collaboration for our artists, staff and audiences. We are an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.
