Role Outline
Qualifications and experience are not pre-requisites. Applicants are expected to be motivated to pursue a career as a professional Tree Surgeon/Arborist with a ‘hands-on’ and enthusiastic approach. Working from 08:00-16.30:00hrs Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00hrs on Friday (a working week of thirty seven hours), apprentices will be provided with PPE and will work under the supervision of highly experienced Arborists within the Tree Services Unit
An initial apprentice salary is paid and increases by around 25% annually to approximately £22’129.00 at the lowest end of the pay band once successfully appointed
Apprentices may expect to gain experience and recognised qualifications in all aspects of practical tree surgery including chainsaw use and maintenance, small tree felling, tree climbing, aerial rescue, using a chainsaw from a rope and harness and pruning operations. The practical work will also cover being groundsman for climbers, related machinery such as chippers, stump grinders and elevated platforms as well as tree planting and young tree care.
As well as the practical work apprentices will also gain the theoretical knowledge underpinning the care of trees including tree identification, tree biology and physiology, common tree pests and diseases, defects and disorders, trees and the law, current environmental, wildlife and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and relevant arboricultural standards
Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it stands to illustrate the wide range of skills and knowledge that a skilled arborist requires.
Apprentices are encouraged to work towards formal; industry recognised qualifications such as the Arborist Level 2 Certificate in Arboriculture. This will be a distance learning course with online tuition
The Parks Service is seeking to fill at least one predicted vacancy permanently on successful completion of apprenticeships however whilst this is the intention it is not guaranteed.
