Description

The University of Birmingham Guild of Students is a £6.7m charity and the students’ union for more than 38,000 students.

We represent our members to the University and other organisations on the issues that matter to students most. We also exist to help students develop skills outside of study, have fun, meet people, and make sure their time at Birmingham is special.

We have recently launched our 2027 strategic plan which has three core aims:

  • Engagement & Participation, we will increase student engagement, participation, and diversity across all our activities. Representation, we will be experts on Birmingham students, representing them on the issues that matter most. Community & Support, we will have an intrinsic culture of support that enables students to thrive.

About the Role

Our Director of Community & Representation is a critical leadership role, and central to our ability to deliver our aims. This Director will lead £1.4m directorate with a core team of 23 and a wider team of up to 200 student staff across our student community welfare activities, advice, advocacy, democracy and academic representation teams.

We have recently undertaken a review of partnership working and have a review planned for our democratic processes. Our Director will be effective in leading change and enhancement processes and be a strategic, collaborative and an excellent communicator.

Experience of role modelling inclusive leadership and working collaboratively with complex stakeholders will be essential to achieving success in this role.

In recent times we have been listed in the Top 100 charities to work for, won Students’ Union of the Year with NUS and been listed an Investor in People. We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer. We have also invest in our leaders by taking part in inclusive training programmes such as NUS’s race equity training and supporting all of our Directors and Managers to achieve ILM level 5 accreditation.

We are based in one of the most diverse communities in the world in Birmingham and we are proud to have an inclusive workplace where Women, Disabled, LGBTQ+ and People of Colour are well represented. In our most recent staff survey, 88% of our staff said they were proud to work for the Guild.

Whilst our overall workplace is representative of the diversity and vibrancy of our local and university community, our leadership team would benefit from further diversity. We especially welcome applications from candidates that are traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles.
