Description

As Director General (DG) Ships, you’ll be one of the most senior acquisition and support leaders in UK government. This is a role that is vital to the nation and never more so in a period of uncertain geopolitical headwinds.

The Royal Navy is at the forefront of our country’s ability to project our power on the global stage, it discourages aggression and maintains our democratic way of life, while maintaining the ability to react to climate disasters at very short notice. As DG Ships, and a member of the Navy Board, you will be part of the senior leadership responsible to make sure we can do this today and provide the vision to ensure we can continue to do this in years to come. The 2021 Integrated Review saw the government commit to a significant capital investment in the Royal Navy, which will bring about the largest concurrent transformation of the fleet for over 80 years, set against an ambition for increased operational capability and deployed forward presence around the world.

You will be responsible for ensuring the Royal Navy’s capability, from the most complex digital ships to operation of stores and equipment in the dockyards are readily available to ensure the Royal Navy can meet their operational missions. You will also support the Royal Navy to understand their options for future capabilities, while managing their complex defence and commercial supply chains.

First and foremost, we're looking for an outstanding leader who will challenge and drive agility and excellence in all aspects of our delivery. You may have gained this experience in the military or industries that have similarities in approach as we constantly strive to bring in fresh ideas and innovation to our business. We also welcome applications from leaders within the defence industry with cross-domain experience.

It is unlikely that we will find all the characteristics in one candidate, however, to help you succeed in this role, you will likely have:

  • A proven track record of delivering major capital and labour-intensive programmes in a complex environment, with a background of working in a commercial and KPI-driven industrial environments working accurately and at pace.
  • Credibility to command confidence and trust at the most senior levels across a range of organisations, both government and defence, combined with proven experience in building effective and collaborative relationships, whilst understanding the nuances and differences between public and private sectors.
  • Proven strategic leadership skills with the ability to build, inspire and motivate teams, ideally within an organisation of similar scale and complexity, to create a collaborative and inclusive environment where people have pride and passion for their organisation.
  • High levels of emotional and intellectual intelligence
  • Comfortable interacting with Secretary of State, Ministers, and 4* senior officials both nationally and internationally
  • A proven track record of succeeding in a high-pressure environment, with experience of working under direct scrutiny and comfortable with change and working with ambiguity
  • A track record of outstanding leadership and accountability within an organisation operating within commercial maritime environment, heavy industries such as Oil and Gas, or Technology or Space industries.
  • You may also be a leader within Defence who wishes to bring their experiences from other domains into the maritime environment.

Diversity is vital to DE&S and the Civil Service as a whole. We actively welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds, with different experiences and perspectives - and we are committed to ensuring that we work in an inclusive way that means everyone in DE&S, the MOD and wider Civil Service can perform at their best.
