Description
The Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR) is seeking to appoint an outstanding academic leader to sustain and develop a major national institute of excellent international standing. The Chair will support and nurture the research of the talented group of mathematicians and mathematical scientists that HIMR has brought to Bristol, London and Manchester, and will make a significant contribution to strengthening the UK mathematics community.
What will you be doing?
This leadership role is a part-time one occupying 50% of a working week.
There is considerable flexibility in the arrangements for taking up the post. For example, as
the leadership role is a part-time one, it may be possible for a suitably qualified candidate to
combine the post with a Professorial appointment at the University of Bristol. The job could
also be taken up on secondment from an existing home institution.
If this post is combined with a Professorial position then a generous personal research
allowance will be provided to cover travel, conference attendance etc. in support of the
post-holder’s research activities.
The appointment is for three years in the first instance with a possible extension. A flexible
and competitive salary package is available.
You should apply if
- Excellent leadership and networking abilities. Strong reputation as a mathematical scientist with strong links to the UK mathematical Community. Charismatic, approachable and persuasive with good people skills. Determination to make improvements, innovative and receptive to new ideas. Ability and willingness to convey to the external community a strong enthusiasm and vision for HIMR’s contribution to UK mathematics. A strong commitment to mentoring and nurturing early career mathematicians.
The Chair’s office will be located in the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol, and they will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Science. The Chair will be supported by a dedicated PA and a team of managers and coordinators co-located at the University, three Associate Chairs in Bristol, London and Manchester, and by the Professional Services Team at the University.
A part of the selection process will involve gathering views about candidates from across the
mathematical community.
The closing date for applications is 23 October 2022.
Interviews will be held on 24 November 2022.
Due to the nature of the Heilbronn Institute's work, a candidate must satisfy vetting before
appointment. UK resident UK nationals will normally be able to meet this condition; other
potential applicants should consult [email protected] ([email protected]) about their eligibility before applying.
We seek to attract, develop, and retain individuals from the widest possible talent pool and the broadest possible range of backgrounds. We are committed to building an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We particularly welcome applications from Black African, Black Caribbean and other minority ethnic groups, as they are currently under-represented across our university.
